This week Scala dedicates its newsletter to the French-American artist Louise Bourgeois, who passed away a few days ago at the age of 98.

Bourgeois was also known as the Spiderwoman, after her famous spider structures titled Maman exhibited at the Turbine Hall of Tate Modern in London and located at some of the most prestigious art collections worldwide, amongst which are the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.

These sculptures, made in steel and marble, are more than nine metres high and allude to the strength of the artist’s mother, with metaphors of spinning, weaving, nurture and protection.

Although Bourgeois worked with Joan Miró and André Masson during World War II, she never became an abstract artist. Instead, her symbolic creations expressed themes of loneliness, conflict, frustration and vulnerability.
She is recognized today as the founder of confessional art.
