"We can confirm that the last remains of Michelangelo Merisi, better know as Caravaggio have been found”: this the announcement from the team who have just completed the analysis on the remains found in the crypt of the Church of Porto Ercole.

The famous artist died there in July 1610 and his body was buried in a communal grave. The successful conclusion of the identification following meticulous & careful investigations thus began from such scant information.

This massive challenge for the research team started by the scientists dating the specimens, excluding those belonging to women & children, with the help of carbon-14 dating. They then determined whether these samples contained high levels of lead and mercury, metals contained in the colors used by painters of the time, and compared the DNA with that of the alleged descendants of Caravaggio, namely those who bore the surname Merisi.

Professor Gruppioni, director of the Anthropology department at the University of Bologna confirmed “By conversative estimates we would say 85% of the remains are that of Caravaggio
Silvano Vinceti, President of the National Committee for the Exploitation of Historical, Cultural & Environmental Heritage, was more positive “The anthropological analysis & advanced scientific techniques have ensured that these results now available to historians are credible & as reliable as an eyewitness account of the time”.
