Named after its designer, engineer Gustave Eiffel, the tower was built between 1887 and 1889 as the entrance arch for the Exposition Universelle in Paris. The 324 m high iron building was inaugurated on 31st March 1889, and opened on 6th May. Supposed to be dismantled in 1909, it was allowed to remain after the permit expired and became the world-famous symbol of Paris. |
