Etruscan cities

Etruscan cities were built in places that could guarantee the following conditions:
  • defence: on the top of steep mountains with good views down to nearby rivers;
  • natural resources: fertile soil where cereals could be grown; rivers and roads in the vicinity; near to mineral sites.
They all had these services for the community:
  • acropolis, the safest area, well defended and under divine protection
  • auguraculum, where Etruscans used to observe the flight of birds
  • meeting places, where people convened for religious practises (sanctuaries) or for secular activities (squares)
  • residential areas and craftwork districts
  • necropolis
  • observation of the surrounding territory
  • raising of defensive walls
