October 4th celebrates Saint Francis of Assisi, patron saint of Italy. Saint Francis preached between the 12th and 13th centuries, and the order he founded is based on the principles of poverty, charity, and love for nature and animals.

Thanks to its illustrious citizen and two famous meetings among the world's religious leaders (organized by Pope John Paul II in 1986 and 2002) Assisi has become a symbol of Peace. This 27th of October, in Assisi, Benedict XVI will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the first of such meetings with a day of reflection, dialogue and prayer for world peace. See www.sanfrancesco.org.

The charisma of Saint Francis inspired many artists, first among them Giotto, who painted the famous frescoes in the Papal Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi. Scala has prepared a selection of images - to view them please click here.
